Taylor to make a few recordings for Gennett Records in Richmond, IN. Taylor, of course, named the band after himself. Along with Marion Underwood (banjo), and Willie Young (guitar), it featured Jim Booker (fiddle) of Camp Nelson in Jessamine County. Jim Booker came from a musical family. He also recorded with his brothers under the name The Booker Orchestra.

Now then, why do I have the image of Jim Booker “redacted” in the painting? Because in the publicity photo for the band, Gennett Records had no intention of showing an integrated band on their label. So, Taylor, who could not play any instruments, posed as a substitute for Booker. Given that information, I am sure you will be surprised to learn (being sarcastic here) that “throughout the 1920s, Gennett pressed vanity records for the Ku Klux Klan with red labels and gold KKK lettering, often listing performers such as the "100 percent Americans." So, as there is no known photo of Jim Booker, I try to call attention to this injustice with the redaction. It is all kinda ironic, because these recordings with Taylor’s Kentucky Boys are notable because they are thought to be the first racially integrated recordings ever made.

$475

Oil on 10" x 14" canvas board

Cousin Emmy was from Lamb, KY, but later moved to Tracy, which is the area my people on my mother's side are from. In 1935, she was the first woman to win the National Oldtime Fiddlers' Contest. She taught Grandpa Jones how to play clawhammer. But she is probably best known for writing the song, "Ruby, Are You Mad at Your Man?" now a bluegrass standard popularized by the Osborne Bros. In her words, she was “the first hillbilly to own a Cadillac.”

$750

Oil on 6”x8” cradled wood panel

“Little Bill” Gaither was born in Bullitt County, KY, and despite being very prolific (he recorded over 100 sides, often with pianist George "Honey" Hill), he is a neglected and vastly underrated bluesman. After his good friend and pianist Leroy Carr died, he was often referred to as “Leroy’s Buddy.” He was probably best known for his song, “Champ Joe Louis (King of the Gloves).” As one source reads, “Blues scholar Paul Oliver highlighted Gaither's innovative yet understudied contributions to 20th-century blues guitar, placing him among key figures whose technical subtleties warrant greater analysis for their role in bridging rural and urban styles.”

$475

“Clifford Gibson”

Oil on 6”x8” cradled wood panel

Born in Louisville, he moved to St Louis in his 20’s where he spent the rest of his life. It is said that Gibson “is regarded as one of the earliest urban blues performers, with no pronounced rural influences.” Like so many musicians from Louisville, he accompanied Jimmie Rodgers on his recordings. Apart from his music, something that strikes me as wild, especially as I was painting him, was his incredibly long fingers. They seem to be longer than Robert Johnson’s, which many say aided in Johnson's style of playing. I saw an article from over ten years ago stating that some of Gibson's 78’s were going for over $3000. Also, those of you who are fans of R.
