Graphite and coffee on 16” x 10” art board

Like so many of the Louisville jug bands, the Dixieland Jug Blowers was a conglomeration of members of various bands . . . this one being members of the Earl McDonald (jug) and Clifford Hayes (fiddler) bands.  Highly influential, at least within the jug band world, they gave us one of my favorite songs of all time, "Banjoreno."  Many of you will recognize it from one of the animations of Terry Gilliam on Monty Python’s Flying Circus.

Jug bands from Louisville were the first to record within that genre, so many regard Louisville as the birthplace of Jug Band music.  And these bands were often used on the recordings of others, like Jimmie Rodgers and Sara Martin (vaudeville-blues singer, also from Louisville).  Give a listen to "Banjoreno."  If you don’t love it, we cannot be friends.
