Ernest Hogan wrote the first published ragtime song “La Pas Ma La” in 1895. He is credited with popularizing the genre and putting on paper its sounds and rhythms. There are many speculations on the origin of the name Ragtime, but it cannot be overlooked that the African American neighborhood in Bowling Green that Hogan grew up in was known as Shake Rag.
