Sam Jones was born in Paducah and lived in the Cincinnati Covington region. He originally went by the name Daddy Stovepipe, but, by the time he cut his records, there was already a musician recording under that name. He chose the name Stovepipe No. 1 to emphasise that he was the original. He played guitar and harmonica and he played a stovepipe the way you would play a jug.
